India has made notable progress in sustainability reporting over the past decade. The journey began in 2012 when the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) required the top 100 listed companies by market capitalization to disclose non-financial information through the Business Responsibility Report (BRR). This requirement was expanded in 2015 to include the top 500 listed entities.
In 2018, to align more closely with global ESG and sustainability disclosure frameworks, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs introduced the National Guidelines on Responsible Business Conduct (NGRBC). These principles laid the groundwork for the transition to SEBI’s more comprehensive reporting format — the Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR). From the financial year 2022–23, BRSR became mandatory for the top 1000 listed companies in India.
As BRSR reporting gains prominence, the focus is gradually shifting toward ensuring the credibility and accuracy of the disclosed data through independent assurance. SEBI has asked third-party assurance for BRSR disclosures which are being introduced in a phased manner to enhance stakeholder confidence and data reliability.
