UNIVERSAL CARBON REGISTRY (UCR)

WHAT IS UNIVERSAL CARBON REGISTRY (UCR) ?

The Universal Carbon Registry (UCR) is a voluntary carbon standard and registry platform based in India, designed to accelerate the generation, issuance, and management of voluntary carbon credits from a wide range of green projects. UCR aims to make carbon crediting more accessible, efficient, and transparent, especially for small and early-action projects that have been underrepresented in traditional carbon markets.

The Universal Carbon Registry (UCR) is a modern, efficient, and accessible platform for registering, issuing, and managing voluntary carbon credits, with a strong focus on sustainable development, transparency, and support for both small and large project developers in emerging markets.

WHY UCR?

Universal Carbon Registry (UCR) offers a next-generation, efficient, and accessible platform for managing voluntary carbon credits, with several distinct advantages:

  • UCR is designed to be faster, cheaper, and more convenient than traditional carbon standards, especially for small and early-action green project owners.
  • UCR is open to both domestic (India) and international projects (Africa, Asia, etc., except Annex 1 countries), supporting a wide range of green initiatives that avoid, reduce, or destroy greenhouse gas emissions, or sequester carbon. The platform is accessible for both small and large-scale projects.
  • UCR uses a decentralized registry to track the issuance, transfer, retirement, and tokenization of carbon credits (CoUs), ensuring transparency and minimizing double counting.
  • Projects must exceed regulatory requirements, be operational, and pass a “do no harm” test-ensuring no negative impacts on communities or the environment. UCR emphasizes environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards and only accepts projects from a predefined positive list, excluding fossil fuel-based activities.
  • Supports Sustainable Development: UCR is designed to facilitate carbon finance flows to small rural project owners, supporting sustainable development and direct community benefits. The platform contributes to India’s and other countries’ sustainable goals by prioritizing projects that align with national and global climate priorities.
